- Dia das Mães na Antiguidade
- A comemoração mais antiga do Dias das Mães tem origem na Grécia antiga, onde a entrada da primavera era comemorada por Reia, a Mãe dos deuses. A tradição de homenagem às mães continuou com as festas em honra de Cibele, também chamada Magna Mater (Grande Mãe).
- Dia das Mães na Inglaterra - Século XVII
- Depois de cristianizado, o Império Romano continuou celebrando o Dia das Mães, mas no 4º domingo da Quaresma, em honra da virgem Maria, e da igreja-Mãe. Mas foi só no século XVII, na Inglaterra, que as pessoas começaram a voltar para suas igrejas-mãe no 4º domingo da Quaresma. Passou a ser conhecido na Inglaterra como "Domingo das Mães".
- O Dia das Mães se tornou um dia importante para os criados, que passaram a ter folga nesse dia para visitarem as suas igrejas-mãe com suas mães e restante da família. Os feriados ainda não tinham sido inventados, por isso o Dia das Mães era a única oportunidade que essas pessoas tinham de terem uma folga para estarem com a família.
- Dia das Mães nos Estados Unidos - Século XX
- No Século XX, uma jovem americana chamada Anna Jarvis perdeu sua mãe e entrou em depressão. Preocupadas com ela, suas amigas resolveram dar uma festa, para perpetuar a memória da mãe de Anna e ao mesmo tempo tentar animá-la. Anna quis que a homenagem fosse estendida a todas as mães, independente de estarem vivas ou mortas, e em pouco tempo a comemoração se propagou por todo país.
- Em 1914, a data foi oficializada pelo presidente Woodrow Wilson, e passou a ser comemorada no dia 9 de maio. Aos poucos, a homenagem foi se espalhando para outros países.
- Dia das Mães no Brasil
- No Brasil, o primeiro Dia das Mães foi promovido pela Associação Cristã de Moços de Porto Alegre, no dia 12 de maio de 1918. Mas foi só em 1932 que o presidente Getúlio Vargas oficializou o segundo domingo de maio como Dia das Mães no País.
- Em 1947, a data do Dia das Mães passou a ser incluída no calendário oficial da Igreja Católica no Brasil.
- Dia das Mães nos próximos anos
- Como dito, o Dia das Mães no Brasil é comemorado anualmente no segundo domingo de maio, por este motivo, esta data é móvel, sendo modificada todos os anos. Confira quando cairá o Dia das Mães nos próximos três anos:
- Dia das Mães 2022 - 8 de maio de 2022
- Dia das Mães 2023 - 14 de maio de 2023
- Dia das Mães 2024 - 12 de maio de 2024
